Chelsea looked to be the only destination for Josko Gvardiol between last summer and the January transfer window, but the landscape surrounding the deal has now completely changed.

The Blue's went out and signed a left-footed central defender in the face of Benoit Badiashile, and the potential of the French defender as well as the faith the club have in him can't be ignored.

Chelsea are still interested in the player but it is at this stage a difficult deal to do.

As reported by the Athletic, Chelsea remain interested in Josko Gvardiol but the signing of Benoit Badiashile is making things difficult.

Chelsea are impressed by the form of the 21-year old defender and fear the signing of Josko Gvardiol would ruin his development going forward as a player.

Kalidou Koulibaly has been poor in his debut season at Chelsea, and he could leave int the summer which would open up the potential for Chelsea signing a new defender.

The problem is Gvardiol and Badiashile are both left-sided defenders, and Gvardiol would have to start due to the fact his transfer fee is expected to break the record for a defender.

Badiashile has been a rock for Chelsea in recent games, and the club will have to decide closer to the summer if signing Gvardiol is worth risking the player the former Monaco man can become.

Real Madrid and Liverpool are lurking for Gvardiol, so Chelsea will have to make their minds up very soon.
