Tottenham Communicating with European Outfit over ‘Compensation Fee’

The Russian invasion of Ukraine triggered an interesting FIFA rule within those two countries that allowed internationals to pursue a new club while the war was going on without securing an official transfer and fee. Shakhtar Donetsk, reigning champions of the Ukrainian Premier League, was one of the squads hit the hardest. They lost Manor Solomon first to Fulham on loan, and then to Tottenham on a free transfer. Spurs, though, are in negotiations with the Miners to give them a small but helpful “compensation fee,” per Fabrizio Romano.

Tottenham Officials in Negotiations with Shakhtar for Solomon Compensation

What the ESPN Report Said

This news was first reported by James Olley, of ESPN FC. Near the beginning, he states that Shakhtar had “contested the changes to Annex 7” which allowed their foreign players to depart. Ultimately the Court of Arbitration for Sport sided against them. Now Sergei Palkin, their chief executive, is communicating with Tottenham’s Director of Football Administration and Governance Rebecca Caplehorn.

The Champions League club’s executive stated that they were in “a negotiation process.” An offer of compensation for Solomon is no longer a hope at this point, it is an expectation. Initial talks were held when the teams met for a friendly match in August. Shakhtar paid over £5.6 million for the Israeli talent, and are hoping to get that back from Tottenham for the young goal-scorer.

Solomon in England

Solomon’s first stint in England, with Fulham, brought great success which earned him his move to Tottenham. Five goals in 24 matches impressed multiple Premier League fixtures. The Lilywhites ultimately put forth the most effort and secured his signature for five years. So far, the Israeli has had limited appearances as he adjusts to Ange Postecoglou’s playing style.

Shakhtar may be in European football this year, but Tottenham’s challenge for the domestic title is going to be unlike anything the young Solomon has ever played for. They are only one point behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and their elimination from the EFL Cup at the hands of Fulham suggests a league run is the club’s main objective.
